Charles Dickens' Rochester
Rochester Cathedral

April 2011

The Bishopric of Rochester dates from the early 7th century. The present church was consecrated in 1130. After a series of fires the church was largely rebuilt around 1180. The wooden spire of Dickens' time was removed in 1823. The present tower and spire were dedicated in 1904. The Cathedral figures in Dickens' novels The Pickwick Papers and is central to the unfinished Mystery of Edwin Drood.
